BRIAN RUTENBERG

BORN 1965
Lives and works in New York City

Brian Rutenberg in a New York based artist who has established an important national reputation for paintings which reflect a deep attachment to the landscape of the South Carolina Low Country where he was born.  His language, however, is highly abstract and the land is represented as rhythmic mark making, rich texture and brilliant color, rather than realistic imagery, that draw the eye across and into his paintings.  His paintings are also visceral and carry our understanding of the landscape in a new direction with a new sense of harmony.

Rutenberg has participated in over 200 solo and group shows in galleries across the country and has been featured in 20 solo museums show, his paintings often becoming part of their permanent collections.  He is also a 1997 Fulbright scholar.  He has recently published Clear Seeing Place, a memoir about his journey to becoming an artist and the influences that inform his art.
