Chuck Bowdish, Biography

Chuck was born in Ohio on May 25, 1959.  His father was a Vietnam era Air Force fighter pilot and electrical engineer.  Therefore, Chuck traveled often affording him many interesting experiences.  His mother, an amateur painter and schoolteacher, taught Chuck how to draw at a very young age.  He began to draw seriously at age 16.

After graduating from high school, Chuck attended the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, where he studied figure painting and drawing under Marbury Brown.  Mr. Brown stated that he had "never seen a student with so much talent work so hard to achieve his desired goals".  During this time, Chuck concentrated his efforts on watercolors and began his first attempts in oil.  One of his watercolors was selected for the permanent collection at Ringling, and he won "Best of Show" at a 1993 alumni show.

In 1980, Chuck moved to New York and received work as an illustrator with The New York Times and Fortune magazine.  He continued to pursue painting and sculpture independently, winning the Edgar Whitney Scholarship and the George Spaventa Sculpture Scholorship.  At The Studio School in Greenwich Village, Chuck studied with Peter Agostini, Gretna Campbell, Nac Carone, Bruce Gagnier and Esteban Vincente.  His concentration was figure sculpture in clay and wax.

In 1986, he moved to Mexico where he painted landscapes and portraits of the Mexican people.  While in Mexico, Chuck was selected for a one-man show at the world headquarters of the Chubb Insurance Company in Warren, New Jersey.

After returning to New York in 1991, Chuck enrolled at The New York Academy of Art on a full scholarship.  He drew from classical sculpture, did extensive figure painting and studied anatomy.
