Peter Burega’s paintings elicit a sense of nature and a reverence for it, but sentiment plays no part in the experience. Rather, the works reflect an awareness of all that is around us – nature in its seemingly chaotic abundance, yes, but also the notion of structure, of rigidity, and complex construction. The admixture of organization and flow.

Additive and reductive paint applications, often referred to by the term pentimento (the artist says he scrapes off as much paint as he applies), is a hallmark of Burega’s work. Using a metal tool rather than brushes, the physical act of spreading paint, scoring the build-up and scraping off the surface to rediscover what came before, are the hallmark of his process. Bugera uses music and memories to influence and shape the dreamlike quality of his paintings. It is this sense of ephemerality that allows viewer to supplant the artist’s perspective with their own emotional reaction and personal engagement.
